Training: Any time, any place

Digital Academy is a new web-based training program from the Hauni Group. The digital solution has not only won admirers in the tobacco industry – companies from other industries are also expressing interest in the interactive training app.

Since the 1970s, the Hauni Academy has offered a wide range of face-to-face training courses for customers. The Digital Academy app, developed in close cooperation with customers, is now taking the Hauni Group’s training services to the next level – providing technicians and machine operators with round-the-clock training courses that offer a comprehensive understanding of their machines. “Interactive 3D animations provide precise, step-by-step explanations of important processes and teach users how to operate or maintain highly complex machines,” says Sven Vulp, who is responsible for the development of the app as “Product Lead” of a cross-functional team.

“The app has an ‘Exploration’ mode that gives users the freedom to familiarize themselves with the individual modules independently. Each user receives a unique login that gives them access to their own content and the courses which are relevant to them.” The teaching concept, developed in cooperation with the Institute for Vocational Education and Training at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), is highly coordinated and focuses not only on knowledge transfer but also on motivating users to learn.

Vulp summarizes the solution’s advantages as follows: “In addition to being available 24/7, the content and methodology offer important advantages for the user. In terms of content, we concentrate on effective and targeted information. The teaching concept we developed in partnership with external experts motivates users and ensures good learning results.”

Training on demand

Users can also access additional functionalities, such as “My Notes” and “Expert Tips”, to supplement the 3D training courses with precious know-how from Hauni and customer experts – or to create their own training courses. This function allows machines from other manufacturers to be integrated into training programs. “This transforms the app, step-by-step, into an interactive knowledge database,” says Vulp. “That’s a feature our customers really like: it helps companies to create a repository of expertise for the future and keep their teams up to date with the latest developments at all times.” Hauni Academy trainers also appreciate the advantages of the new app. “We use the Digital Academy as a state-of-the-art platform for providing customers with training material,” says Marc Lütten, Hauni trainer. “It also helps us to enrich our classroom training courses with modern content presentations.”

Digital innovation process at Körber

The Digital Academy app is one of the innovations supported by the Körber Group as part of a strict, multi-stage selection process.

In April 2018, the Group relaunched this process with a focus on optimized, cross-functional collaboration, greater efficiency and enhanced performance in the area of innovation.

With its new digital innovation process (DIP), Körber is promoting promising ideas from its core business, as well as new business models, throughout the Group with the aim of developing successful digital products.

Interest from other industries

The positive reception has left Bernd Pape, Head of Digitization at Hauni, in no doubt about the success of the new app. “In the tobacco industry, our app has three unique selling points: we know our machines and processes inside out, we can use existing 3D data for our machines, and we have developed a platform and a content creator to deliver content into the system. So far, no other solution available on the market combines these advantages.”

These advantages are also attracting attention from outside the tobacco industry. Thus, Hauni is in talks with mechanical engineering companies from the pharmaceutical industry that wish to use the modern training platform as part of a partnership. “Our app was developed specifically for small and medium-sized mechanical engineering companies,” explains Pape.

“We understand their needs precisely – low barriers to entry, flexible solutions and a modern learning platform. And we know how to communicate with these potential customers as equals, from engineer to engineer. Furthermore, companies like these also appreciate our individual service and the secure and trustworthy handling of their data.”
